History of the Park guided walk

Petworth House and Park Petworth House, Petworth, West Sussex, United Kingdom

Mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, this two hour guided walk explores the historic areas of the Deer Park, how it was used and how it changed. Covering the various areas of the Park and what they were used for throughout history, the walk explores Coney Park and Little Park all the way to Outwood and the lost gardens and commons as well as the emergence of the Brownian Deer Park. Tickets are free, but booking is recommended to guarantee a place.

Heritage Weekend at Burton Mill

Visitors to Burton Mill will see heritage milling in action! We will be milling stoneground wholemeal and white bread flour throughout the day. Our 1880s Roller Mill will be crushing oats and the restored Hydraulic Ram will be pumping water. There will be a small collection of working stationary pumping engines on display. We have a small exhibition on the history of Burton Mill and the restoration of the milling machinery. Admission is free and all are welcome! Open on both Saturday and Sunday 11am to 4pm. A free (donations welcome) vintage bus will be calling at Burton Mill throughout the weekend. The bus tours begin at the Leconfield Hall.

Petworth Heritage Weekend: Town Walks

Petworth House and Park Petworth House, Petworth, West Sussex, United Kingdom

Join a free walking tour of the town to discover more about the local heritage. Collect your ticket from the Church Lodge entrance to Petworth House and Park. Tickets allocated on the day on a first come, first served basis. The times of the tours are 11:30, 12:30, 13:30 & 14:30 and they last 1 hour.

Petworth Heritage Weekend: Vintage Bus Tours

An open topped vintage bus will be setting off from the Market Square on tours of the sites located in the Petworth area, stopping at the Coultershaw Heritage Site, Burton Mill & Bignor Roman Villa. Bus rides are free but donations are welcome. See the timetable below.  

Heritage Weekend at Bignor Roman Villa

The stunning remains of a 4th Century Roman home and farm with world-class mosaic floors in a spectacular Downland setting. Special events for the Heritage Weekend Costumed interpretation and demonstrations throughout the day. Meet the Archaeologist - Chichester District Archaeologist James Kenny will be in attendance during the morning of Sunday 11th for artefact identification, if you have any artefacts do feel free to bring them along. Worthing Archaeological Society with a display on their recent dig at Bignor. The Domina of the House with her "What's in the Box" display of Roman items. Opening times are 10am - 4.30pm (last entry 3.30pm)

Heritage Weekend at Petworth House

Join us over the Petworth Heritage weekend to explore the extraordinary art collection in the striking state rooms of the Baroque inspired House. Take a stroll in the expansive Capability Brown landscaped Park, where you might spot some of the fallow deer herd. Relax in the Pleasure Garden, the perfect place for a picnic. The servants' quarters by contrast offer a glimpse of life 'below stairs'. Over the weekend we will have family games for all to enjoy, and art on the lawn to have a go at. The Ice House will be open over the weekend, one of the biggest still to exist in England.

Visit our picturesque heritage site to watch a working waterwheel power an 18th century beam pump to produce an impressive fountain. Go on a riverside adventure by taking part in our Wind in the Willows trail and recieve a goody bag. See if you can impress Mr Toad by designing a boat to send down our water chute and invent a crafty motor car, Poop Poop! Arrive at our site in style on the Vintage South Down bus which will be travelling between all participating local heritage places. This weekend has something for all ages and interests and not to be missed! Late news: A collection of vintage tractors will be on show throuhout Saturday.

The Ice House, one of the biggest still to exist in England, will be open over the weekend from 1.30pm-4.30pm.

Heritage Crafts – demonstrations & sales

Our local heritage crafters will be at Coultershaw demonstrating their skills. Crafts on show (to be confirmed) include: Willow basket making, Weaving, Spinning, Woodworking, Knitting, Bee Keeping and Sign Writing! Some of the crafters will bring along items for sale.
